After lots of discussions spanning about a week and a half, the Habs are happy to welcome Timmo Kimmonen a much needed 2nd D man to the team.

To STL: Barret Jackman + Yr 3 Buf 1st + Yr 4 MTL 3rd + Matthieu Carle

To MTL: Kimmo Timmonen + Steve Wagner.

The Habs orginization is happy to sure up our D and hope wagner turns out to be the PP QB he has the potential to be.

This seems like a relative bargain for Timonen. Wagner basically offsets the loss of Carle, meaning it is a low (or high, depending on how you look at it; basically, probably a 20th or worse OV pick) first-rounder (probably a second-pairing D or second-line forward, if he ever pans out), a top-four defenseman who is a very large downgrade from Timonen, and a 3rd, which you can basically ignore.

Challenge-worthy? Maybe not, IMO, but I'm surprised STL couldn't get more.

If you compare it to the original deal, it's almost the same thing.

Ian Cole, Mike Murphy, and JM Liles is pretty damn close to Barrett Jackman, Matthieu Carle, and a first. Cole has more potential than Carle, but Carle is closer to the NHL. Jackman is a bit better than Liles, and depending on who you talk to Murphy is equal to about a first. Of course as a love him/hate him prospect, I'm sure there are some GM's who wouldn't even think of giving out a first for him.

The other parts of the deal were Crombeen essentially for a third and some pocket change, and then Wagner for a third. Crombeen is NHL proven, probably never more than a good banger/grinder, but he belongs in the league and could probably put up a 20 goal season someday. Wagner might be the closest to the NHL of St. Louis's defensive prospects, but his status as a legit NHLer is still in question. He was givin a chance last season with huge injuries to Brewer and Johnson, but didn't exactly capitalize.

That's just my take. I more than welcome other opinions, of course.

Didn't want to come across as criticizing you / questioning your hockey knowledge, stl, so I hope you didn't take it that way.

Personally, I feel that Murphy is easily worth a first, but hey, maybe others disagree. Again in my opinion, Cole has a higher ceiling than Carle, and the latter isn't a whole lot closer to the NHL than the former. I would agree that Jackman is slightly better than Liles.

Here was our deal:

Kimmo Timonen, BJ Crombeen for John-Michael Liles, Ian Cole, Mike Murphy, Y2 ANA 3rd-rounder, $550K cash

I would argue that Wagner (offensive D) >> Crombeen (4th-liner), Liles < Jackman, Cole > Carle, Murphy > 1st-rounder, and then $500K is added in.

I think that might have been my first deal, and I wouldn't be surprised if I would have been able to get more, either Wink

But anyway, again, it's not challenge-worthy IMO, but I still think you could have gotten more for him. Whatever.
